Inside Look: Our Digital Crowds Pipeline

March 6, 2025

Background actors’ performances are just as important as those first on the call sheet. Join us in looking at at the benefits that Dimension’s performance-first digital crowds offering brings to any VFX or real-time production.

In our latest behind the scenes film, Academy award-winning VFX Supervisor Paul Norris joins Dimension’s Co-CEO Simon Windsor and CTO Callum Macmillan to detail the huge production efficiencies that our state of the art volumetric pipeline brings.

Designed to be flexible and scalable, our digital crowds offering can be rolled out for any size production, and is perfect for both rendered VFX sequences or real-time production. In this film, the team discuss how it’s been used on several recent high profile films and shows, including Wicked, Those About To Die and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Dimension’s expert team and our commitment to innovation means that our volumetric capture pipeline is second to none. It replaces 2D chromakey shoots with fast and efficient volumetric sessions that fully capture the performances and authenticity of your actors. Not only that, but they can be done alongside principle production and remove the need for actors to go back through any costume or hair and make-up processes.

Our pipeline creates a full surface reconstruction of any actor, and captures the authenticity of their performance in a full 360-degrees. A virtual camera can be moved anywhere around the final volumetric assets which can be seamlessly dropped in a scene at any angle. This process delivers a new breadth of creative freedom for filmmakers, who can make decisions on how to create or extend on-screen crowds at more stages throughout the production process.
