Visualisation and Motion Capture for Venom: The Last Dance
Dimension and DNEG 360 provided motion capture data to visualise every twirl in Venom’s dance with Mrs. Chen.
In this behind-the-scenes video, Tim Doubleday, Dimension and DNEG 360’s Head of On-Set breaks down the performance capture process. He explains how the team captured precise animation data to drive Venom’s performance and fully support the VFX pipeline.
Our team was provided with a LiDAR scan of the set, which we took into Unreal Engine to achieve a perfect 1:1 match between the on-set environment and our mocap stage. Key set pieces – like the stairs and jukebox that Venom interacts with – were recreated as structures in our mocap stage to align with the practical shoot.
Our performance capture setup featured 44 Vicon V26 Valkyrie motion capture cameras, full body and hand tracking, and two Blackmagic reference cameras. We retargeted the motion capture data onto DNEG’s 7-foot Venom VFX asset, with data streamed directly into Unreal Engine.
By visualising the scene in Unreal Engine, the VFX team could see how Venom and Mrs Chen interacted in the final composition. This realtime feedback offered invaluable insights for VFX Supervisor John Moffatt and the VFX team.
