The Virtual Production Magic Behind Ellie Goulding's “Like a Saviour”
Ellie Goulding and her creative team Just Fred embarked on an adventure, leveraging virtual production for her “Like a Saviour” music video. A year on, we revisit how the epic ever-changing desert visuals were created.
DNEG Virtual Production – a partnership between Dimension Studio and DNEG, showcases a behind-the-scenes video process of Ellie Goulding’s music video for "Like A Saviour", narrated by Tim Doubleday (Head of Onset Services, Dimension).
Filmed on our LED volume in London, a sand-covered raised platform and a practical dune were constructed to seamlessly blend in with the LED wall, transforming the stage into a distant desert oasis backdrop for Ellie and her dancers.
Using Unreal Engine and TouchDesigner, the team crafted the desert scenes and star constellations. The technique provided a seamless 24-hour day-and-night cycle, with the ability to capture performers ascending and descending through the environment.
The true magic of this project lies in the creative control given to the director, DOP, and creative team, all facilitated by virtual production.
